Scafell

Scafell Outdoor Learning

Scafell have enjoyed a fantastic first lesson of the year in our woodland area this week with our Forest School Leaders from Barnardo’s.  We began this session by introducing our forest schools’ code: look after myself; look after each other; look after the woodland.  Next, we identified the boundary of our outdoor environment before embarking on some team games and challenges.

Our next task involved searching the forest for anything that might create marks on our small pieces of cloth.  We were surprised by the range of colours we discovered; including bright emeralds and deep crimsons! These were used to create colour studies, prints using hammers and compositions using only natural materials found across the woodland floor.

Can’t wait for next week’s session… Den building!

Our Wonderful World Display

The Westmorland County Show field was buzzing with activity this afternoon as everyone was busy preparing for tomorrow’s show. This year the theme of Our Wonderful World celebrates work from each class. There are striking paintings in a variety of media all on a nature and the natural world theme. Examples using pencil crayon, paint, collage, ink pen and pastels are all represented. We have displayed some super Pebble Pets and mini pebble pet homes. There are photos of us at work in the outdoors too. Do come and take a closer look at our display in the magnificent Learning for Life tent on the far side of the show field tomorrow.

Pebble Art

This week Scafell Class have enjoyed creating beautiful pieces on pebbles celebrating our wonderful world; including: fish, leaves, strawberries, mice, a ladybird, a summer meadow and trees!  These have been designed and carefully painted to form part of our display at this year’s Westmorland County Show taking place on Thursday next week.  Look out for our stand in the ‘Learning for Life’ Tent!

Visiting Musicians from QES

Today, we welcomed music students from QES into school. They came in a bus, heavily laden with instruments galore. They spent the morning, with Skiddaw Class, composing atmospheric music to describe, first below, Baba Yaga (a wrinkly, boney witch) and, second below, the Firebird (a magical creature) using the whole range of our wonderful percussion instruments and including violin and piano. In the afternoon, the group performed to the whole school excerpts from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. These were brilliantly introduced with points to listen out for in each piece – perhaps a conversation between the trumpet and the flute turning into an argument towards the end, or count how many times the triangle plays a part. It was interesting to see a great range of instruments playing so well together including a double bass (larger than most of our children) guitars, saxophone and three keyboards along with a wide range of percussion. Thank you so much to all the students and their teachers, Mrs Hartley and Mr Leather, for all your hard work in preparing such a fantastic musical extravaganza for us. Pictures at an Exhibition will be our new assembly music in the autumn term so we can really get to know the pieces in more depth. We’d love to welcome you back again next year!

Baking Rattie Shortbreads!

Here we are baking rattie shortbread for our summer production; The Piper of Levens Village tomorrow evening. We have made approximately 160 biscuits; enough for everyone in the audience and the cast. Each one will be personalised with its own iced rat in a variety of colours.

Thanks to Mrs Mason it’s been a lot of fun!

Y6 Junior Citizenship

This morning, Year 6 pupils attended Junior Citizenship at Kendal Fire Station where they learnt how to be safe, responsible, help themselves and others in an emergency; how to stay safe online and understand the truth about the recreational drugs available to so many young people in our community.

Very thought provoking; challenging and a fantastic opportunity to develop some crucial life skills before they take the leap to high school!

Scafell Tennis

Scafell Class enjoyed a whole afternoon of tennis. They developed their skills and played some short rallies.

There was certainly some very competitive play and not just from the children!

Paintings inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe

Scafell have enjoyed completing beautiful and original mixed-media compositions inspired by the American Artist, Georgia O’Keeffe who is famous for her enlarged studies of flowers, dramatic cityscapes and glowing landscapes.  She is recognised as the first American artist to experiment with pure abstraction and is recognised for her contribution to modern art across the world.

Pupils in year 5+6 have used watercolours, pastels, chalks and pencils to create their imaginative studies of flowers.  Each one is a unique interpretation with careful consideration to tone, colour, texture and shape.

Scafell Science Investigations

Scafell Class have enjoyed investigating how beans and seeds germinate and explored the conditions for growing seeds during their Science topic on Living Things.  Today we continued our observational drawings and annotations showing how our beans have changed over time.

South Lakes Pupil Parliament

On Thursday we went to Pupil Parliament. We started off with a wonderful speech by David Bone then we did some fun ice breaker activities with the other children. First we sculpted each other into  Olympic athletes then we had to be a piece of garden furniture with our whole group. Our next activity was making a day at the zoo with our body it was fun. After that we had an interesting talk all about parliament, elections and voting. We now all understand how this democratic process works in our country. Our next task was to be separated from everybody we knew and make a political party with a manifesto and a logo. Then we got a ten minute break and had a huge cookie and a drink. Then we got in our groups and got our speeches and slogans ready for the election. After a wonderful lunch of pizza and chips with sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream; we had the election And school squad Utd won but Mrs Farraday was also elected as an MP! Then we looked at some real manifesto publications; and after looking at them all we were persuaded that we supported some parties more than others . Then the teachers thanked Rachel Dodgson and David Bone who do an amazing job at organizing and creating SLPP.
