Hurray for Harvest!

Our Harvest preparations are in full swing for tomorrow’s celebration in St John’s Church. Each class will be showcasing some of their learning with growing vegetable soup, sharing the apple harvest and facts and figures about King’s Foodbank. This is our local Foodbank in Kendal who will be the recipients of our harvest gifts this year. Cans, packets and long life gifts will be most welcome. Please do come along for our 2pm service – all welcome.

Maths is fun

Year 5 and 6 have been learning about Place Value this week. We’ve been playing games with digit cards and learning many different strategies to win a game and fox our opponent!

Woodland Adventures

Today,  Scafell enjoyed their first visit to our woodland for some outdoor learning.  We began by discussing the hazards that we might encounter in the forest and talked about our three forest schools’ rules:  to look after yourself, to look after everyone and to take care of the forest.   In pairs we weaved or plaited 3 strands of wool to help us remember, before enjoying some team challenges involving our shoes, ropes and blindfolds!

We also enjoyed a creative scavenger hunt uncovering some interesting items including a number of wriggly and crawly mini-beasts!

Do come and see our work tomorrow…

Preparations for the annual Westmorland County Show are in full swing and the Learning for Life tent is taking shape as I write. Our display is all about China this year and each class has produced a variety of different elements based on this theme. Do come along and see the wonderful range of art and design, geography and English work we have on display. Here is a sneaky preview – we do hope it survives the night!

Chinese Fans

Scafell have enjoyed their first afternoon back in school designing and making Chinese fans for our Westmorland County Show Display in the ‘Learning for Life’ tent.

We’ve really enjoyed researching ideas before practising and developing our own designs in our lovely new sketchbooks.  We’ve also carefully measured and cut the frames of our fans.  Look our for our finished designs later this week….

Rounders and Picnic Treat for Scafell

Today, Scafell really enjoyed celebrating their achievements this year, with Miss Dawson, by creating a Lego town (using area and perimeter knowledge), playing rounders and eating too much food at our picnic! It was a lovely chance for us all to relax; to talk about the amazing year that has been (and the exciting year ahead!) and to spend time with friends.

Thank you to all the families who provided our Scafell class with lovely food including: home-made gingerbreads, home-made samosas, doritos, fruit, cookies, pork pies and lots more!

I think we ate too much – especially after Bowfell’s fantastic cake sale! But, what a lovely way to spend a Wednesday afternoon. You deserve it Scafell!

Clearing and gardening in Bowfell

Today, Year 6 did an amazing job clearing out and gardening in Bowfell outdoor area. We weeded plants, painted, cleaned, cleared out the playshed, wheel-barrowed and lots more! Bowfell looks great. Miss Dawson was especially happy that the children weren’t afraid of spiders!

Thank you Year 6 for all of your hard work and thank you to parents for lending your children the gardening equipment.

What a green-fingered lot!

NFU Logo Competition Winner

On Friday, Scafell had a wonderful visit from our local police and the NFU (Country Watch). Cumbria Constabulary and the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) have teamed up to create Country Watch – a scheme that will specifically tackle farm based crime in Cumbria. Because of their fantastic work, they asked all the schools in the area to design a logo for their team.

A few months ago we were told the great news that R.P and E.M were shortlisted, amongst other schools to win the logo design. On Friday, even better news came with E.M being told she had won the logo competition for Cumbria!

E.M received her printed logo and a NFU country watch hoody with her logo on. Very exciting! Look out for Erin’s logo on Facebook NFU and the local country watch team hoodies.

Our Cinderella Summer Performance.

Last week, on Monday afternoon and on Tuesday evening, Skiddaw and Scafell joined together to perform our summer play; Cinderella. With a wonderful cast; amazing props people; and a talented tech team; the play was a brilliant success!

While at Lockerbie Manor – Scafell’s recent residential- we discovered a ceilidh (sounds like Kaylie) dance, which we performed at the ball in the play! Skiddaw class were the cheeky, loveable mice, and before we even received our parts, we were all given scripts to perform at the auditions!

Our backdrops were drawn by the props team and we included lots of sounds (played by our tech team). We had a great audience, who participated in lines such as ‘oh no she isn’t, oh yes she is!’ The outfits were all amazing, and the face paint very convincing, as the ugly sisters had extremely dramatic makeup!

What a wonderful time we all had! A big thank you to Mrs Wadey and Miss Dawson for organising the play itself and to all our families who supported us; helped us learn our lines; organised our amazing costumes and came to watch our Cinderella. Thank you!

Y6 End of Year Treat 2018

Thank you to everyone involved in giving our Year 6 leavers a wonderful end of year treat today.  We enjoyed trampolines in Morecombe and an ice cream at Happy Mount Park in the rain; before heading back to school to put on our party outfits.  Year 5 Tea Club, with the help of Mrs Mason, Mrs Coker and Mrs Wadey, had made us the most scrumptious meal of pizza and salad followed by an ice cream and strawberry sundae.  Delicious!

Huge thanks also to FOLS for funding our trip to Morecombe.  Lifelong memories of fun with friends at the end of their primary days will stay with them all forever!
