Scafell

Scafell’s Talks and Presentations

This week, children in Scafell have made a great start to their two minute talks on a subject of their choice.  So far, we have had presentations on: cats, karate, warships, tanks, giraffes, Warhammer and camper vans!  The children have used artefacts and IT presentations to support their speeches.  We are looking forward to more next week!

Scafell Class enjoying Forest Schools

Year 5 + 6 enjoyed a wonderful afternoon in our woodland area this afternoon.  We started our session with some challenges to test our teamwork skills including listening, co-operation, supporting one another, sharing ideas and problem solving; some made a little more tricky with blindfolds.

We then moved on to our group challenges: making a small-world sheltered environment on a theme.  Each group worked collaboratively to develop their ideas into amazing miniature communities involving fairies, unicorns, farms, Minecraft and many more.  Each had a range of imaginative features such as gardens, furniture, water slides, hot tubs, campfires, ploughed fields, doorways etc.

We have all certainly developed our creative thinking, imagination and skills to work collaboratively.  Great fun too! More expeditions to our wildlife area continue this term.

Let’s play music!

On 18.5.17, four people, in a little orchestra from Cumbria Music Hub, played us five tunes from the Carnival of the Animals – the tortoise, the lion, the kangaroo, the swan and the cockerel. There were 2 flutes, a keyboard, a clarinet and a bassoon. The tortoise was a really slow piece like it was plodding along. The cockerel going cluck was really short and spiky, in other words staccato. The swan was smooth and gracefully played, in other words legato. The lion’s tune sounded really royal as lions like to be king of their kingdom. It was very jumpy in the piece for the kangaroo.

The lion was the most popular piece in Skiddaw Class.

“I really liked the kangaroo’s tune because it was high and jumpy like an actual kangaroo!” said Daisy.

Stay Safe – Speak Out!

Yesterday, the NSPCC visited school to deliver  assemblies to our key stage 1 and 2 children. Their message was very clear!  We all have a right to stay safe but if we feel uncomfortable, unhappy or in danger there are things we can and should do: tell a trusted adult or phone Childline on 0800 11 11.

Children in year 5 and 6 learnt even more in their workshop that followed. This was all about what we should do in a range of situations.  Our discussions covered a range of issues affecting children all over the U.K. including; neglect, emotional abuse, bullying, cyber-bullying and sexual abuse.  Scafell Class will be learning more about how to stay safe when sharing on-line throughout this term.

There is lots of information for children and parents on the NSPCC website: www.nspcc.org.uk

Designing and Making a take-a-way Pizza

Year 5&6 had great fun on Friday preparing and making different sorts of pizzas.  First they worked in groups to make the dough before choosing from a range of ingredients for the toppings.  They carefully considered different dietary requirements by preparing vegetarian as well as dairy-free pizzas too. The next challenge involved creating a brand for their pizza and making a take-a-way box complete with a closing lid and decorated with attractive designs to promote their brand.

To follow up this practical, fun day; we will be reading different sorts of recipes in order to get ideas about how to write our own instructions for making pizza.

Lasagne….. mmmmmm!! Delicious!

What a wonderful treat all the staff at Levens School had on Monday evening.  A two course meal prepared and served by our year 5 pupils.  The children had also organised invitations; prepared menus; set the tables (including flower arrangements); chosen music to create atmosphere; and even did the washing up at the end!  Everyone was extremely impressed with the 5 star food – the lasagne was ‘delectable’ according to one diner and the fruit salad had everyone wanting more.  Well done to our pupils and their leaders – Mrs Mason and Mrs Coker!

Year 5 visit Dallam for an afternoon of K’nex!

Last week, we went to Dallam to enjoy a science afternoon.   It was really fun.  First we got into pairs and started our tasks which were: building helmets and cars!  Making the hats was tricky because they had to fit our heads and have special features.  Everyone’s was different but we had to make lots of changes so that they fitted on our heads!

by Trinity and Erin

At first we didn’t know what k’nex was but then our tutor, Fran, explained and gave us instructions on how to build a car out of K’nex. He gave us two specific things for our car.  These were to fit a shoe onto the car and the second was to have a compartment that fitted a spare tyre inside.  On our car we decided that we would use Rosie’s shoe to put on the car. Our second decision was not to use a band to stick the shoe to the car, but use Rosie’s velcro on her shoe instead.  Fran set a ramp for each car to be rolled down to see whose car travelled the furthest.  We came in 3rd place – It was a fantastic afternoon!

Flower Dissection

Scafell Class began their new science topic by discussing the functions of a plant and then dissecting a flower to identify the male and female parts.  First the petals were carefully removed to reveal the stamen and the carpel, then each part was carefully examined and identified. The lesson was concluded by drawing a cross section of a tulip and labelling the various parts of the flower.

Our Easter Service

We were welcomed into St John’s Church today for our lovely Easter service. Bowfell made us all smile by beginning with reciting William Wordsworth’s famous poem Daffodil. They then gave daffodils out to members of the congregation. Skiddaw explained all about their recent seed planting and potato growing, ending with a joyful rendition of a lovely new song “Sow seeds of Hope!” by Penny Stone. Scafell spoke beautifully clearly and told us the story of Easter in rhyming verse. Thank you to everyone at St John’s for all their involvement in school life this term including Open the Book performances, help with assemblies and through special events like Experience Easter.

Making Palm Crosses

Years 5 & 6 have been learning about the significance of the palm cross in the Easter Story.  We followed two different sets of instructions to make our own crosses which proved to be a little tricky!  With perseverance – we succeeded. We also considered the symbolic importance of this cross and reflected on our Christian value of ‘forgiveness’ in our daily lives.
