Children in Need Rickshaw Challenge

The whole school was outside this morning clapping, singing and shouting our support to the brave young people taking part in the Rickshaw Challenge.  Well done everyone and keep going.  Levens School is cheering you all the way to Glasgow!

We Will Remember

This morning we walked down to church for our Remembrance Service outside St John’s Church.

Members of Scafell class read a famous poem – In Flanders Fields, members of Skiddaw class read a prayer they had all written and Bowfell class laid poppies they had all made on the memorial.

We sang a song about remembering and observed our two minutes silence.

We were led by Pam and joined by Governors, staff and family members. Thank you to everyone – we showed our great respect and thoughtfulness for others.

Meet our 2017 Eco Team!

At lunchtime today, Eco Team had their very first official meeting with Miss Dawson. It was very productive and the team have thought up lots of fantastic ideas to encourage the school and the community to care for the environment. Just a few ideas discussed include: creating an Eco Code, organising a litter pick, creating posters to display around school (saving electricity, looking after plants, not littering), an Eco Book and even adopting an endangered animal such as a Red Squirrel.

We will be meeting again next week to make a start on these ideas! We will keep you posted with our exciting news.

Knots Galore!

We began today with a few games of hide and seek – Finlay, Jason and Alfie were particularly good at hiding! The theme for this week was knots! We were challenged to see how many sticks we could bundle up to carry, securing them with any of the knots we have learnt in class or by making up our own. Q. How many sticks can you carry? A. Lots – over 100 in come cases. Lots of counting, estimating and problem solving here!

Others explored knotting and tying to attach leaves and twigs to trees to form hanging sculptures.

We finished off the afternoon with some warming hot chocolate – mmmmm!

Many thanks to the adults who came with us – we’ve all been grateful to the weather and enjoyed our time in the outdoors.

Disco Fever!

What a fun filled Friday evening we all had dancing and playing games, with grateful thanks to the wonderful Paul Jones. School Council organised a super time for us all and took on the responsibility of running music bumps and musical statues as well as organising the refreshments too.  Thank you to everyone who supported us!

Fun in the Woods

Today Skiddaw class enjoyed their afternoon in the woods exploring their senses and making magic potions. Some might make you tall, invisible or turn you into an animal. Others might change you into a leaf to blow about on a branch and fall in the gentle breeze. Lastly, we were camouflaged by covering ourselves with leaves and used our sense of hearing and sight to experience the woods – we heard cows and rumbling and saw butterflies flitting about. We are looking forward to our second session next week!

Did You Know…?

As part of our Geography topic, Skiddaw class have been researching interesting facts, from a selection of websites, about a European country. We have worked together in teams to present our facts, in a big poster. We chose to research Germany, The Netherlands, France and Iceland. We are hoping to amaze you with some of our fun facts in Good Work Assembly this Friday – we hope to see you there!

Don’t Worry – Be Happy!

This afternoon, Skiddaw Class have been thinking about ‘worries’.  We used our circle time discussions to explore what we worry about and how worrying makes us feel.

Next, we used a large outline of a child to identify how worries affect us.  We wrote our ideas on post-its before placing them on the area of the body where we feel the worry.  These included: struggling to sleep, snakes in my tummy, shaking, feeling like I’m going to cry, feeling sick.

Our session moved on to starting to think about ways in which we can overcome worries and we will continue finding different strategies in our next lesson.  We listened to a song by Bobby McFerrin titled ‘Don’t Worry – Be Happy’ and ended our session back in our circle time arrangement sharing something that makes us feel happy!

Amazing Apostrophes

Skiddaw class have been learning about using apostrophes correctly. Ben N explained that apostrophes are like commas that have floated up attached to a balloon. We have also learnt that they have two uses. One is missing letters like it is and it’s and the other is belonging to like Katie’s pen. We are also looking at places that don’t need an apostrophe like plural words such as cats and other words that end in s. Words that end in s don’t always need an apostrophe. We are trying to use them correctly in our writing and spot them in our reading and in the world around us!
