Multilink Model Making

To launch our new Geography map topic we have been building models, then looking at them from different view points. We have drawn views from the top (otherwise known as aerial or plan views) and side views. We swapped our drawings and challenged others to remake our models.

Violin Concert

This spring term, Year 2 children have been learning to play the violin with Mrs Hurley. They have finished their 10 week block of lessons learning lots about how to hold the instrument, pluck the strings and use the bow too. They were proud to show their new skills to Skiddaw Class and gathered parents. A group of Year 3 and Year 4 children also have lessons and they demonstrated what can be achieved in one or two year’s work. Any Year 2 children wishing to continue into the summer term should complete and return the violin letter in book bags. Many thanks to Mrs Hurley too.

Our Easter Service

We were welcomed into St John’s Church today for our lovely Easter service. Bowfell made us all smile by beginning with reciting William Wordsworth’s famous poem Daffodil. They then gave daffodils out to members of the congregation. Skiddaw explained all about their recent seed planting and potato growing, ending with a joyful rendition of a lovely new song “Sow seeds of Hope!” by Penny Stone. Scafell spoke beautifully clearly and told us the story of Easter in rhyming verse. Thank you to everyone at St John’s for all their involvement in school life this term including Open the Book performances, help with assemblies and through special events like Experience Easter.

Spring is in the Air

We welcomed Darren Wilson into Skiddaw class this afternoon to talk to us about his new allotment and launch our science work for next term – plants! We’ve made the most of the spring weather by sowing a selection of different seeds including broccoli, broad beans, beetroot, sunflowers, marigold and poppies.

We’ve put them on the warm window sill and will keep a close eye on them in the coming days – fingers crossed we see some signs of life!

Ellery Cross Country – Wednesday 15th March

What a splendid sunny spring day we enjoyed at Elleray this week.

Our Team joined 360 other competitors to ‘take on’ the annual Elleray Challenge, a true test to stamina, determination and grit!

After attending the weekly running club in school, our pupils were most certainly up to the task, all finishing in the top half of their fields and astounding staff and parents with their stoical attitude over a hilly course and a 2K distance.  Everyone performed above expectations without exception and as a result received a super medal and the Elleray famous refreshments of burgers and chocolate.

Well done to all, bring on the new running season 17/18 we say!

Fairtrade Fortnight

Eco Team helped Levens CE School support Fairtrade Fortnight by running a stall selling lots of Fairtrade goods today. There was a massive range of products from chocolate and sugar, bracelets and cutlery – something for everyone’s budget! Thank you to everyone for contributing to our success as we raised £140.40.

Fairtrade goods are ones where the farmers and producers are guaranteed to get a fair price for their products. Look out for the Fairtrade symbol on products in the shops.

World Book Day 2017

We have been celebrating the 20th Year of World Book Day.

We fancied a change from dressing up and so challenged the children to bring in a bag of items that would give clues to a famous book character instead. See us here, sharing our bags in family groups this morning.

We have also challenged everyone to bring in a photo of ‘extreme reading’ – reading in an unusual and wonderful place. Thank you to everyone – you have so entertained and impressed us with your creative ideas. They will, very soon, be on display in the library so do come and take a look! We’ve been having a poetry theme in classes and will be sharing our performance poetry with everyone in school.

RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch

Skiddaw Class spent an hour taking part in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch. We watched out from all points of the classroom and recorded what birds we could see. We followed the same procedures as the all other schools, counting only the maximum number of each species we could see at once. The results were collated and we submitted our data to the RSPB website. We also did other bird related activities, including making some true-to-life bird head snappers.

Our full bird list was:
