Superb Skipping Skills

On Friday we welcomed Anthony, a skipping coach, into school. He worked with every class…twice…teaching them good skipping techniques including tricks to develop their skills. We all learnt about standing up tall with our backs straight, penguin position hands and windmills. He commented especially on the children’s excellent listening skills and was impressed with the speed of improvement seen over each session. Pupils showed a strong sense of perseverance and we all had great fun skipping the day away. Celebration Assembly showcased examples of our skills from every class in traditional and in French skipping. We are looking forward to skipping more at playtimes from now on.

Exciting Electricity

This week we have been using our electrical circuits for testing materials that let electricity flow through it, a conductor, and materials that stop electricity flowing through them, an insulator.

Tag Rugby Winners!

A Year 3 and 4 squad of 12 represented school at the latest Dallam interschool festival. It was a really chilly day so we were glad to be running around and showed great improvement during the afternoon’s games, learning how important it was to be in a good position to be passed the ball. We showed good understanding of rules and tactics of the Tag Rugby game, thanks to Mrs Cragg’s super training prep. We were joint winners of our group!

Thank you to Penny Garnet at Dallam for organising us all including a set of young referees who did a super job too and to parents and wider family who transported and came to cheer us on!

Anti-Bullying Week

Last week, pupils at Levens School were all talking about bullying!  What does the word bullying mean?  What should we do if we think we are being bullied and who can help us?  What should we do if we see that someone is being bullied?

We have agreed that being bullied means that someone is unkind to you Several Times On Purpose – STOP!  Being unkind might mean online comments that are hurtful, leaving people out at playtimes, being physical, calling people names.  To raise awareness and keep us thinking about this important issue we took part in National Odd Socks Day; we also made a pledge to choose kindness; and we created our own sock designs with anti-bullying slogans and top-tips to STOP bullying!

Wonderful Wasps

This week, a new member of our village community bought us a wonderful wasp nest that they had found in their new house. We were fascinated to look at it and carefully touch its fragile outside. We could see the layers of wood that the wasps used to create the exterior. We loved the fact that we could see inside too. It resembled a honeycomb with columns holding the sections apart. Thank you very much – your donation has inspired lots of interesting discussion and observations.

We Will Remember Them

This morning, we spent a few moments reflecting and remembering the contribution so many made so that we can enjoy life in a democratic society.

Our service was led by Reverend Bryan in the grounds of St. John’s on the 11th day of the 11th month. At 11am we stood in silence to remember and respect those who gave so much.  Each class made a wreath that was laid at the foot of the war memorial and some of our oldest pupils read the names of soldiers from Levens who had fought in World War I and II.

We were joined by members of the community and parents.

Road Safety Year 1 & 2

Yesterday, Year One and Two took part in a wonderfully interactive session about road safety with Sarah from Pyjama Drama. They listened to stories; took on different roles and characters; and learnt the Green Cross Code whilst getting active and having fun.

Service In Our Community

Huge well done and thank you to everyone who contributed towards our Harvest offerings this autumn.  Today, our new School Councillors sorted all the gifts before setting off to King’s Foodbank in Kendal to deliver a boot full of food and drinks.

Experience God’s Goodness in Creation

We walked down to St John’s Church in the glorious sunshine on Thursday to take part in Experience God’s Goodness in Creation.  Members of St John’s congregation lead stations for us to visit focused on Harvest and the wonders of the natural world.

Harvest of the earth, the soil, the grain, the oceans and the animals involved us in drawing, using our sense of touch, spotting things in pictures and thinking about where things come from that we might take for granted!

Many thanks to all the volunteers from St John’s who made this experience so engaging and especially to Pam whose thorough organisation ensured a  smooth and successful morning.

Back at school we have made pledges about how we could make a difference and these are on our tree in the library. They are really worth a read as there are good ideas for us all. If we can each do a little bit, those little bits add up to a big bit! What might you pledge?
