Scafell

Country Watch Competition NFU

Well done to our two fantastic winners in Scafell, Rosie and Erin, for their success in the Country Watch Competition NFU South Lake & Dales, All of Scafell created amazing logo designs for the competition which supports the police in keeping our local areas safe, including protecting farms around the area. We had a lovely visit from a local officer who came to congratulate our two winners in Scafell, on the last day of term. Our two finalists both won a voucher and will be entered into the final; along with the finalists from other participating schools. The overall winner will be selected by Cumbria Police shortly! Well done both!

Experience Pentecost 2018

On Thursday 24th May, the children (and staff) thoroughly enjoyed their morning in church, experiencing and learning more about Pentecost. The children listened extremely well to all the stories and discussions and enjoyed creating peace doves, ‘prayer’ bunting and lighting the candles. Thank you to all who ran and participated in the event, including: the Open The Book team, Pam and all the members of St John’s Church. Also, a big thank you to Mr Wadey for the photos and Mr Hunt for walking both groups down to church.

Bowfell Clear Up by Year 5

This afternoon, Year 5 (with Miss Dawson) enjoyed some gardening and clearing up in Bowfell’s outdoor area; all ready for more work to commence on Friday! The children worked hard by brushing up leaves, cleaning equipment, saving creepy crawlies and weeding the plants. They did a great job, despite the change in weather and had a great time too. Thank you Year 5!

Scafell Outdoors!

On April the 30th, Scafell went on an exciting adventure to Lake Windermere!

The adventure began at 1 o’clock once we had all kitted up into our tight wetsuits and excitedly walked down to the jetty. Scafell did three activities and they included: Canoeing, Kayaking and Sailing. They were split into three groups and each group participated in two of the activities each. With the kayaking, you were in a single kayak and had a double ended paddle to row yourself in. As for the canoeing, you were in a longer boat, which held multiple people and you had to work in a team to go further. While in the canoe, we sang some songs and played some fun games! Sailing involved a race, as we were sent deeper into the lake and then the instructor let us go! The two boats raced each other back to the beach. At the very end, we had a chance to jump of the jetty into the water!

In conclusion, this trip was great fun and was a brilliant chance to get outside!

Learning in the sun

What beautiful weather we have had today! Scafell class decided to make the best of the sun, whilst still learning and working hard. This morning, we took Maths outdoors and practised the four operations in the form of a ball game (+,-,x and /) and this afternoon we continued our Science topic outside, based on how animals adapt to their environment. Let’s hope the sun decides to stay!

Sport Relief Action

Each day this week, School Council are organising Get Active sessions at lunchtime playtime. We are challenged to keep an activity going in the Sport Relief Zone for half an hour non stop! Monday was bouncing balls, Tuesday was doing “keepy uppy” and Wednesday was singing Heads, shoulders, knees and toes! It was harder than we thought to keep going all that time! School councillors are on hand to give out stickers to those taking part.

Did we manage to keep it going for the 30 minutes every lunch time? YES!!

Thank you for coming in something SPORTY on Friday and bringing a donation of £1. We made £70 to add to the nation’s Sport Relief total and we learnt that half of the money raised is spent in the UK and half is spent in other areas around the world.

English Outdoors

Yesterday, Scafell class took advantage of the beautiful, sunny weather and brought their English outdoors! The children learnt all about casual connectives through an outdoor game, where children had to pass a connective to a friend. Their friend then had to use the connective in a sentence which made sense (in 10 seconds!) If they failed to do this, they were out of the game! It helped the children put their connectives work into practice and to now support their explanation writing for the rest of the week. Well done Scafell!

Bright Sparks

What a fantastic day Scafell class have had, learning nearly everything there is to know about Electricity. The children really enjoyed the day, and especially liked making noise with their buzzers!

We learnt about: where electricity comes from; the risks of electricity and how to be safe; the symbols used to draw circuits; made predictions and created practical circuits; learnt about series and parallel circuits; tested different materials to see whether they were insulators or conductors and even got to test if O.D was a conductor!

Miss Dawson and the children want to say a huge thanks to Sim from CStem who made today a fantastic experience and a special thank you to our Friends Of Levens School (FOLS) who funded the days events. THANK YOU!  The children really are bright sparks after today!

Finding Missing Angles

This week in Maths, Scafell class have been learning all about angles. Today they enjoyed a practical lesson finding missing angles and didn’t mind that Miss Dawson had drawn and taped all over their desks!

The children worked really hard and used many mathematical skills to find the answers to some challenging questions! Mrs Farraday also joined us and was particularly impressed with the children’s knowledge and engagement. Well done Scafell!

An Arty Afternoon

Yesterday, there were lots of sporting events happening so most of the school were out winning! However, some children were left in school, and enjoyed a lovely afternoon doing art in Scafell with Miss Dawson.

Skiddaw are currently working really hard learning about Fractions and really needed a colourful and bright display for their classroom. Therefore, we worked as a team to produce this amazing piece! Miss Dawson really enjoyed spending time with Skiddaw and it looks like the children had fun too!
