During last term, year 2 pupils have been learning to play the violin with the wonderful Mrs Hurley. They performed for the first time this morning to parents and lots of their friends. Well done all!

We have started our Lego Space Challenge and really got stuck into our first building task today. See us in action here, working together, sharing the constructing, encouraging each other and delighting in our success!
We were so lucky with the weather this morning as members of St John’s Church community delivered a completely outdoor Experience Easter. First our younger children, then the older children travelled round 4 stations that took us through the story of Holy Week.
During the story telling, the children were engaged in different activities to encourage thoughtful contemplation. We held stones, made crosses, placed sticks on a fire and planted seeds. These nasturtium seed pots will be coming home for children to care for and continue to reflect on the importance of Easter to Christians all around the world today.

Eco Team took part in the Great Cumbrian Litter Pick 2019 today, organised by Friends of the Lake District. Despite the rainy weather, they were happy to get outside equipped with special monster litter pickers. At first sight it didn’t look like there was any litter to be found but on close inspection we found lots of small bits of plastic and sweet wrappers and collected a whole bucket full in the end. Well done Eco Team – a very good deed done!
Attendance at school was celebrated on the last day of the Spring Term. We were delighted to celebrate so many of our pupils who have had good attendance this term as well as congratulate the pupils who have been registered with 100% attendance for the whole year so far!
Skiddaw class welcomed Jamie from Cumbria Wildlife Trust into school to help us learn more about the wonderful wildlife that is on our doorstep. He bought in a life size model of the rare and exciting bird of prey that is settling into to a very large nest in trees on Foulshaw Moss as you read this!
We learned a little about their migration and about how humans have changed their habitat and behaviour to encourage these fantastic fish eating birds back to our area. We are now busy making posters to let others know about how to appreciate and watch out for wildlife in our local area and we are going to be visiting the Foulshaw site later in the term.
The children of Levens made a great first impression with the Cumbria Wildlife Trust staff with their excellent answers and interesting questions alongside the thoughtful discussions that they engaged in. This looks like it will be a very worthwhile partnership.

Mrs Farraday doesn’t often receive phone calls offering school money…but this is exactly what happened yesterday! Sampool Caravan Park held a fundraising event recently. They wanted to support a local organisation with the proceeds and chose us. Angela and Steven presented us with a huge cheque for £249.00 in a special assembly today. We did a wonderfully rousing three cheers and thanked them for their generosity. Mrs Farraday’s already thinking how best to spend the money and we will let the home owners and staff at Sampool know as soon as we’ve decided.

Skiddaw class have been learning about the benefits of Fairtrade and Mrs Mason has baked with every member of the class this week using Fairtrade items of bananas, sugar and chocolate. We held a Fairtrade tea and coffee afternoon on Friday and the canteen was bursting at the seams with takers for cups of Fairtrade tea or coffee along with slices of our baking. Shopper also purchased things from Pam and Eco team’s Fairtrade stall which sold £131.45 worth of goods. Thank you to everyone who queued so patiently and came along to raise awareness of this important issue.
We have been involved in a Scavenger Book Hunt today to celebrate World Book Day. In teams we had to search in books and find a long list of different things like an apple, some magical words, a contents page or a sad character, We worked really well, gathering our findings and exploring the many books that we have in our classroom.

The aim of World Book Day is to celebrate authors, books, illustrators and – of course – reading! That is exactly what we have been doing today. This year, instead of dressing up we challenged the pupils to create a wooden spoon book character … and they rose the this challenge WONDERFULLY! We have also been busy doing book activities in class and shared books together in our family groups. Thank you to all families who helped and worked together on this project. One winner from each class will be announced in tomorrow’s Celebration Assembly. Take a look at their creations here.
