SCARF

Class One learn about Paramedics

We were lucky enough to receive a special visit from Claire the paramedic last week who came to tell us all about her job. We learnt about the different modes of transport used by paramedics – did you know that some travel by bike in big cities? We found out why people sometimes needed help and thought carefully about different scenarios and whether or not each one would need a call to 999. We learnt some important information about what to do if we ever needed to call for an ambulance.

Bonfire Night Safety

On Tuesday we were lucky enough to receive a visit from some of the officers from Kendal Fire Station to talk to us about how to keep ourselves and others safe on Bonfire Night. We found out some interesting facts around the history of the celebration as well as some important tips about handling sparklers, being around bonfires and leaving it to adults to handle the fireworks!

Class 2 then also had the opportunity to look around one of the engines they had brought along and the equipment on board. What a lovely way to begin their Fire of London topic!

A Collaborative Classroom

It has been lovely to welcome Class 4 back to Levens! This term, much of our curriculum has a focus on collaboration and working together. It’s the theme for our SCARF unit of work, the purpose of our PE lessons and even comes up in Computing as we explore how computers connect and work together.

To kick us off, we have completed two teamwork challenges and thought about how well we worked as a team and how what sorts of things make working in a team more effective and more fun.

Police Visit to Class 4

As Class 4 arrive at the end of their learning journey on Crime and Punishment this term we were all treated to a visit from the rural police.  James and Pete spent the morning in School describing what it is like to be a police officer in 21st century Britain; and this enabled our pupils to make some interesting comparisons with the first police known as the ‘Peelers’ or ‘Bobbies’ after Robert Peel.

The children had pre-prepared some interesting questions…….

Q: Have you ever been frightened?

Q: Do you think there are more crimes today than in the time of the Peelers?

Q:  Would you recommend a career as a police officer?

Q:  Do you have to always abide by the law?

Q:  Have you ever used your taser?

They explained and demonstrated the uses of their equipment and described the types of rural crimes or incidents that they might be called to.

A thoroughly interesting and informative morning.  Huge thanks to our visiting ‘Bobbies’ for talking to us this morning.  We learnt lots, but let’s hope it’s the first and last time any of us are put in handcuffs!!

Class 2 at YMCA

Class 2 had such a fantastic day at YMCA! The children challenged themselves both physically and mentally. They worked co-operatively to problem solve and succeed. The support and encouragement they gave to each other was amazing to see. They also helped Miss Robinson to step out of her comfort zone and experience the blue tubes! Well done Class 2!

The Best of Days at YMCA

Class 3 have just returned from an AMAZING day at YMCA – what a way to begin our half term. There were many notable personal triumphs today with children showing resilience, huge courage and a willingness to try something new.  Their support for each other was also very strong so that everyone had a day filled with good memories.

With the weather on our side, we enjoyed a giant obstacle course which ended in a very muddy boggy area which we had to literally walk the planks over. We learned to fire arrows with a bow – not something that is easy by any means. We also sailed out into the middle of Windermere in one large boat, working together to propel it along, singing at the tops of our voices and playing all sorts of fun games. The instructors Amber and Andrew were wonderful and they really enjoyed their day with such keen, eager and polite pupils who were a credit to Levens School! A big thank you to all who helped us raise the funds for these special YMCA days through our marathon challenge last year – this was a very worthwhile and wonderful experience.

Platinum Jubilee

On Wednesday, we enjoyed a wonderful day of celebration for the Queen’s Jubilee.

The day started with an assembly giving thanks for our Queen and designing and making clay plaques to commemorate the occasion.

During the afternoon we enjoyed traditional games in our playground including What’s the time Mr Wolf, Fire on the Mountain and Hopscotch.  It was lovely to see the children from all across our school playing together happily.

Next we moved into our brightly decorated hall to watch snippets of the Coronation, eat delicious refreshments and sing the National Anthem at our indoor street-party.

After all the restrictions of Covid over the last two years, this was an amazing way to end this half term!

Meet our new School Councillors

Here are our new School Councillors who will be representing each year group in School over the next 12months.

Every pupil in school was given the opportunity to vote for the person they thought would listen to the views of others, be willing to work hard, have good ideas and be able to suggest ways to raise funds to support charities and improve our school.

More news from our team will follow soon!

Day for Ukraine

Thank you for your support on our ‘Day for Ukraine’ last Friday which raised a staggering £452, which included a very generous donation from one pupil’s grandfather.

Every penny will be forwarded to one of the DEC’s (Disaster Emergency Committee) 15 charities to support refugees affected by this terrible crisis in Ukraine.

Next week, every child will be involved in a democratic vote to decide which charity they would like to support, following some input from Class 4 about how the charities that are members of DEC help people in crisis all around the world.
