Class 2 Shapes!
We have started the Spring term off with learning about 2D and 3D shapes. Here are some pictures of us doing some exciting learning!
Levens School
South Cumbria Cross Country Trials
On a wonderfully bright, sunny and cold afternoon, 27 Levens runners undertook the South Cumbria trials over a challenging and muddy course at Casterton, climbing railway embankments, and taking on hilly inclines. This was done, without exception, in a positive and determined way and staff present were in awe of resilience and fantastic unselfish support for the whole team. Well done everyone!
Five Levens children, have progressed to the next stage and will be representing the school at the Cumbria trials in Penrith later this month. The personal successes includes, placing in the top three for two of our girls and a team bronze in the Y5 girls’ race. Amazing outcome on an amazing day!

Amazing topic homework.
Class Three have loved learning all about ‘The Romans.’ To end out topic we have researched an area of Roman life and produced a piece of work on this. The finished results are amazing and included shields, baking, models and fact files. There were all fantastic thank you all very much for your support at home. A selection are now on display in the school hall and here are some for you to see.
Village Walk
This week Class 2 have been for a walk around the village using our map and compass skills that we have learnt this term. We also looked at the different human and physical features that are in Leven’s.
Brilliant Baking!
This week Class Three have been very busy learning how to make biscuits for our Design and Technology topic. The topic began with a taste test, testing biscuits already available to buy. We then learnt how to follow a recipe to make a basic biscuit, learning techniques such as creaming and the importance of sieving. Another taste test was completed! Following this we adapted the recipe and each child make their own biscuit. Again, a taste test was conducted and the results were used to design a final recipe suitable for adults at Christmas. This was out target audience. The children then made their final dough adding their chosen ingredients and designed and made their own packaging for this, considering the best materials to use to be environmentally friendly. A huge than you to Mrs Mason for helping us and passing on her baking expertise.
Dallam X Country – What a Day!
What an absolutely incredible time we had with our team of 25 runners (largest entry ever), at the Dallam event last week.
The day was cold and miserable but we were all warmed by the happy and excited smiles of our runners.
There were over 250 children participating, from eight schools, the majority much larger than Levens, but with the hearts of lions, remembering everything from their training sessions and with the most marvelous support from parents and fellow runners, all previous school records were ‘smashed to bits’, with 3 first places, 2 second places, and 5 other top ten finishers. In addition, all athletes exceeded all expectations and had the ‘time of their lives!’ Roll on the winter months and the excitement of more competition, we all cannot wait!
Super spots for Pudsey!
We enjoyed a lovely day on Friday raising money for Children in Need. Thank you to all those of you who provided us with baked goodies to buy! In assembly we learned about the history of Pudsey Bear – did you know he is 37 years old?
We found out how the money Children in Need is used in our local area and were delighted to learn that the local charity ‘Anti Racist Cumbria’ received a grant to support their work. We used their materials and video production recently as part of our learning during Anti Racism week. We raised a fantastic £305 – thank you all for your generous contributions!
Splendid Sound!
Class Three have been very busy learning about sound. We have looked at a variety of musical instruments and identified how the sound was made. We now know all about vibrations! We used the drums and rice to investigate the link between the noise level and the vibrations. We concluded that the louder the noise the greater the vibrations. In computing we are learning how to use data loggers and this has proved very useful in our science lessons. We have investigated sound levels around school at different times of day and also in different locations. We discovered that Class Three was nearly the quietest place in school! We will continue with our sound topic and the next step is to learn about how we hear sounds. There are lots more experiments to come.
Clay Creations in Class Three
Class Three have been very busy designing and creating amazing clay tiles. The children looked at examples of tiles from the Roman period and used these as inspiration for their own designs. They then experimented with clay and learnt new techniques. They then utilised these skills when designing and making their final pieces. Here are a few!
