The sun was shining when Class Three visited Sizergh Castle. We all enjoyed the walk through the fields and a play on the wild trail. Following out picnic in the sunshine we had a talk about the history of the castle including the wedding cake chimneys! We then had a look around the castle and garden and then walked back to school. A fabulous day with lots of local history.
Just before the half term break, Class 3 and Class 4 visited the Jewish Synagogue and Museum in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.
During the morning we toured the inside of the Synagogue, learning all about the symbols, artefacts and furniture surrounding us. We heard about how Jewish settlers had travelled from different parts of Europe to this area of Manchester during the industrial revolution to trade and set up their lucrative businesses. This Jewish community soon became a thriving, busy commercial hub where business boomed for many decades.
We also got the opportunity to handle a range of different artefacts, including: prayer shawls, a sedar plate, prayer scrolls and Jewish hats, known as Kippah. The museum upstairs had even more displays and objects to explore and sketch.
We have learnt so much more about the Jewish faith and heritage, both during this experience and in our focus on Judaism as part of Multi-faith week.
Class Three had a fantastic day at White Scar Cave and the park at Ingleton. The children learnt all about limestone rock formations and fossils on the tour of the cave and really enjoyed looking at the stalagmites and stalactites. A picnic followed and then a play in the park at Ingleton.
In R.E. this week we have been learning about change and how this is not always easy to see. We read the story of Zacchaeus in The Bible and identified changes in his behaviour and actions as a result of meeting Jesus. We then thought of questions to ask Zacchaeus and asked these during our hot seating activity.
Class Three had a fantastic afternoon taking part in a rounders event with other local primary schools. The sun was shining for us and we enjoyed the opportunity to play rounders with a variety of teams. We all had great fun and learnt lots of new skills and tactics.
Class Three have had an amazing day making their own savoury seasonal tart. We started the topic by looking at climate zones and where food is grown, we connected this to food miles and discussed how it is better to eat seasonally where possible. We then moved on to refining our peeling and chopping skills, learning how to safety use vegetable knives and peelers. Following this, we did some taste tests of seasonal foods and used this to design our own seasonal tarts. Our final results were amazing and the children were very eager to try them!
The children had a fantastic morning with Bob earlier this week learning all about first aid. They learnt how to deal with common issues such as cuts and grazes and then moved on to learning all about CPR and the recovery position. Essential life skills were learnt by the children.
Our topic for this half term has been plants. This has been a great opportunity to carry out lots of experiments, making prediction, setting up fair tests and then recording our findings. We loved finding out about the function of the stem and testing to see what a seed needs for healthy growth.
Class Three have been learning all about the French names for fruit and vegetables this term. They have previously learnt the names for other foods and have become more confident with ordering foods in French. They have also used the lovely new French dictionaries to look up unfamiliar foods. Brilliant work Class Three.
This half term the children have been learning all about orienteering and team work. This has included a blindfold obstacle course and various challenges on the field. The children have used photographs to locate orienteering stations and have been learning the orienteering symbols. We have all had great fun doing this.
