Brilliant Baking!

This week Class Three have been very busy learning how to make biscuits for our Design and Technology topic. The topic began with a taste test, testing biscuits already available to buy. We then learnt how to follow a recipe to make a basic biscuit, learning techniques such as creaming and the importance of sieving. Another taste test was completed! Following this we adapted the recipe and each child make their own biscuit. Again, a taste test was conducted and the results were used to design a final recipe suitable for adults at Christmas. This was out target audience. The children then made their final dough adding their chosen ingredients and designed and made their own packaging for this, considering the best materials to use to be environmentally friendly. A huge than you to Mrs Mason for helping us and passing on her baking expertise.

Splendid Sound!

Class Three have been very busy learning about sound. We have looked at a variety of musical instruments and identified how the sound was made. We now know all about vibrations! We used the drums and rice to investigate the link between the noise level and the vibrations. We concluded that the louder the noise the greater the vibrations. In computing we are learning how to use data loggers and this has proved very useful in our science lessons. We have investigated sound levels around school at different times of day and also in different locations. We discovered that Class Three was nearly the quietest place in school! We will continue with our sound topic and the next step is to learn about how we hear sounds. There are lots more experiments to come.

Clay Creations in Class Three

Class Three have been very busy designing and creating amazing clay tiles. The children looked at examples of tiles from the Roman period and used these as inspiration for their own designs. They then experimented with clay and learnt new techniques. They then utilised these skills when designing and making their final pieces. Here are a few!

Class Three visit Vindolanda

The sun was shining once again as Class Three set off to Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum. The children had an amazing time exploring the remains of the fort and town at Vindolanda, walking in the steps of the Romans. Our geography map reading skills were put to good use as we went on a hunt to work out the missing words, whilst also learning about the buildings and their use. We learnt all about the work of the archaeologists with our very own expert! We then looked at all the discoveries in the Vindolanda museum and thought carefully about what each discovery told us about the Romans. We then moved onto the Roman Army Museum and learnt about the different types of soldiers and life on Hadrian’s Wall. We finished the day by looking at the location of the Magna Fort and discussing the future archaeological dig on this site. A wonderful time was had by all and we will be using our new found knowledge to good use in the classroom.

 

Super Science

As part of our topic on light we have been learning all about reflective materials. Class Three tested different materials to see if they reflected or absorbed light. They used this knowledge to design a new running jacket for Mrs Coker to keep her safe. I think you will agree the designs look fantastic! The children were all very enthusiastic and have continued to point out reflective materials as they see them.

Amazing Artists

Class 3 have been busy learning about block printing. We started the topic by looking at Roman mosaic tiles, focusing on the borders. We then practised designing our own borders and moved onto creating a central design. We drew this to scale and then transferred it to a Styrofoam block and used this to print. The results are bold and striking and will be on display in school.

 

Brilliant Bushcraft

The sun came out for Class Three’s trip to Saint Catherine’s Wood in Windermere. We started the day by learning how to start fires. Brilliant teamwork was demonstrated as the children worked together to collect sticks and they then showed resilience using the flint and steel to start the fires. The children then learnt how to whittle using peelers and cut up willow and peeled it in order to make artist charcoal. After lunch, the children used their newly acquired skills to make a wooden butter knife out of hazel. Endurance could be clearly seem as the children persevered and all make an excellent wooden knife. We finished the day creating pictures using our own charcoal.

A wonderful day in the woods was enjoyed by everyone and the children are already asking, “When  can we go again?”

Perfect Pavilions

This week Class Three have been working hard learning all about pavilions. We have learnt some new words such as aesthetics, stable and cladding. We looked at examples of pavilions from around the world, experimented with making structures with cocktails sticks before designing our own pavilion. We then made our amazing models!

 

 

 

Class 3 visit the Temple for World Peace

The sun was shining once again as Class 3 visited the Buddhist Temple for World Peace in Ulverston. This was  lovely end to our topic on places of worship, Our visit included some meditation, acting out the story of the life of Buddha, sketching some of the Buddhist symbols along with a picnic in the sunshine.

Amazing Archery.

Classes 2, 3 and 4 had a fantastic time learning how to shoot a bow and arrow! The children loved the sessions where they learnt how to stand, load and fire the arrow. Their aim definitely improved as the session progressed. They were so enthusiastic that some of the children will continue to develop their skills at an after school club in September.
