Learning about the Circulatory System

After watching a video and powerpoint explaining this system; Scafell acted out the flow of blood through the heart, body and lungs.

One child (carrier) set off first, circulating the body carrying a piece of card, red on one side and blue on the other, representing oxygen-rich and deoxygenated blood.  They travelled from the heart to the body, where the oxygen was used and the card was turned to blue.  Next, they travelled back to the heart where they were pumped to the lungs to receive more oxygen and turned the card back to red.  From the lungs, they travelled back to the heart and then back to the body, completing the cycle.  Gradually more carriers were added until we had a complete blood cycle moving continuously; just like the blood in our bodies.  Sounds complicated doesn’t it, but this practical acitivity helped us to get to grips with it, as well as being enormous fun!

Next lesson will be following up our practical work by labelling the different sections of the heart and explaining the flow of bood in our own writing.

Pupil Parliament

4 pupils from Scafell Class represented the School at the Netherwood Hotel on 4th November at the South Lakes Pupil Parliament.

17  local primary schools were in attendance, learning about democracy, the parliament system and how to ‘have a voice’.

Our children presented their school research project, on improving the school dining experience, to Holme School and were able to give advice to Holme pupils on how to improve their playtimes.

The Pupil Parliament voted for a whole area project and decided that they will be looking at Road Safety as an area to address throughout all participating schools, exciting times!

Our group now have further research and work to do amongst Levens pupils, before they return to the Parliament in the spring term, to develop the joint project.

Toasting Marshmallows

Bowfell Class have been learning about Bonfire Night today and Guy Fawkes’ Gun Powder Plot. This afternoon we got wrapped up and ventured outside. We lit a fire, toasted marshmallows and sang songs.

The children reminded each other about how to stay safe this weekend, if they are going to an event or having their own.

Learning new ball skills

On Thursday afternoon’s Mrs Mason has been coaching Skiddaw class in netball skills. It has been wonderful to be able to play outside in the late autumn sunshine. Thank you to Katie for taking these photos of us in action!

Amazing Mazes

After listening to the rather gruesome Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, we set to work on creating mazes of all kinds. Some of us wanted to create them in lego, others in boxes, some of paper or on a computer. Others wanted to be able to crawl inside their maze themselves!

Autumn Bog Art

We have been using playdough and exploring a range of autumn finds to create our own artwork. Can you tell what we’ve made?

Musical moments

We have been using the well known tune of Frere Jacque and changing the words for this autumn harvest time of celebration.

In music we have been arranging this piece, playing tuned and untuned percussion with great effect. We have been concentrating on working as a team and trying to keep together following the conductor or leader. We videoed last week’s performances and today discussed what went well and what would be even better.

Popcorn Senses

We’ve been learning all about our senses in Bowfell Class. We started with a piece of popcorn!

We looked at it with our eyes, felt it with our fingers and smelt it using our nose. Then, the best bit, we got to taste it using our tongues and listened to sound it made with our ears.

We are going to be exploring all of our senses over the next week, in lots of different ways.

Special Insect Visitors!

Today, two special stick insects came to visit in Skiddaw class. They are called Spider Woman and Greedy and we learnt some interesting facts about them.

Did you know that stick insects eat bramble?

Did you know that all insects have six legs?

We are creating fact posters to display around school this week – keep an eye out for them!
