Sports Day

The sun shone for this years sports day. We did a circus of team activities followed by some flat races. It was a hard fought competition but this years winners were Yellow Team.

A walk up Loughrigg

Skiddaw Class enjoyed a sunny walk up Loughrigg. It was part of our summer term outdoor education programme organised through Dallam Outdoors.

A Royal Visitor

There has been a very important guest in our classroom this week. The Queen has been a very prominent figure, sitting proudly on the throne with her orb and sceptre, giving out orders and making demands. She has always been surrounded by her corgis and guards making it very difficult to get to meet her.

The boys even built her a palace from bricks!

Bowfell Butterflies

We have patiently watched 5 tiny caterpillars on their life cycle. They took a week to munch through all their food before attaching themselves to the roof of the container to form their chrysalis for another week. The transformation was completed over half term, with the last butterfly emerging on the first Monday back. We spent the day observing them before deciding to release them into the wild.

It was a magical moment. As each butterfly took flight the children waved and shouted ‘bye bye’.

Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations

Today the whole school enjoyed celebrating the special 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, our longest reigning monarch. We shared a delicious and plentiful lunch, much of it prepared by the children. We rounded it off with a grand crown parade. Here are some photos to give you a flavour of the day!

Here they are; all looking extremely smart in the their wonderful new kits, kindly donated to us by PV Dobson. These photographs were taken just before our home match against Crosscrake School just before the half term break. Both teams secured victory, with Alfie scoring a hat-trick. A huge thank you to Mr Medcalf, our team coach for training the club every Wednesday! Well done everyone!

Ghyll Scrambling

Scafell Class enjoyed a fantastic day scrambling up Stickle Ghyll in Langdale last week with four instructors from Dallam Outdoors. Although the day started with a torrential downpour, the sun began to shine as we climbed up through the stream, clambered over boulders and showered under waterfalls.  The children supported each other at each stage of the scramble working together as a team!  This trip was paid for by our sports funding which comes from central government and is allocated to provide sporting experiences in addition to the PE curriculum in school.

Canoeing on Coniston

We had a lovely sunny day canoeing on Coniston Water. Dallam Outdoor took us out on the water. We paddled over to Wild Cat Island, of Swallows and Amazons fame, had our lunch and the paddled back. There was just time for a quick splash about in the very cold lake!

Quarry Visit

As part of this term’s Rocks project we had a visit to Back Lane Quarry near Carnforth. We saw the whole process, extracting the rock, crushing it and sorting it into different sizes. We saw the big machines and discussed what the different rock products were used for. The highlight of the trip was watching them blast a new face! Thanks to everyone at Aggregate Industries.

Skiing Competition

Very well done to our school skiing team who took part in an inter-schools competition on Kendal’s slopes this week. There were over 100 children taking part from 10 different local schools.   Levens’ team won the under 7s category and we are extremely proud of their success.
