Skiddaw’s Harvest

We have been thinking all about sharing linked to the Christian festival of Harvest.

We’ve been lucky that Sam’s family have shared their apple harvest with us. We looked carefully at the colours and textures of the outside of the apples and drawing them using oil pastels. We then cut them in half, in different ways, and have drawn them in chalk pastels.

This week we have also been practising our cutting skills using the bridge grip and the claw grip to safely chop up the beautiful Bramley apples before cooking them. We have enjoyed sharing and eating them with cool natural yogurt.

Growing Vegetable Soup

This week, Bowfell class have been inspired by reading the book Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert. They peeled and chopped, ripped and cut the vegetables using carrots, cabbage, sweet potato, onion and potato. They added stock and let it simmer on the cooker. The next day they enjoyed eating their soup at snack time.

Carrot Writing

Bowfell class children have had the opportunity to practise their writing skills with carrots and paint this week. This has been a way to engage in writing and mark making in a fun way and to develop their fine motor skills. Here a few of them in action…

Sketching Twigs

Skiddaw class have been developing their sketch book techniques using twigs in an unusual way! At first they just used their sense of touch to feel the bumps and textures of a special twig and drew sketches from just what they could feel. This was an exciting but tricky task! Then they were allowed to use their sense of sight to look carefully and draw their special twig.

It was really interesting to see the similarities and differences between our two sketches.

Here are a few pictures of us at work and a few of our sketch book pages.

Maths is fun

Year 5 and 6 have been learning about Place Value this week. We’ve been playing games with digit cards and learning many different strategies to win a game and fox our opponent!

Woodland Adventures

Today,  Scafell enjoyed their first visit to our woodland for some outdoor learning.  We began by discussing the hazards that we might encounter in the forest and talked about our three forest schools’ rules:  to look after yourself, to look after everyone and to take care of the forest.   In pairs we weaved or plaited 3 strands of wool to help us remember, before enjoying some team challenges involving our shoes, ropes and blindfolds!

We also enjoyed a creative scavenger hunt uncovering some interesting items including a number of wriggly and crawly mini-beasts!

Skiddaw In Full Flow!

Well, we can’t quite believe we have made it to the end of week 2 of the new year already. It was lovely to speak to parents at our classroom drop in this afternoon but we thought everyone might like to see us in class and in action. This afternoon we’ve been busy box modelling, crafting, building construction, making music and drawing too. The new Skiddaw class have settled well and are picking up the new rules and routines so things can run smoothly.

Do come and see our work tomorrow…

Preparations for the annual Westmorland County Show are in full swing and the Learning for Life tent is taking shape as I write. Our display is all about China this year and each class has produced a variety of different elements based on this theme. Do come along and see the wonderful range of art and design, geography and English work we have on display. Here is a sneaky preview – we do hope it survives the night!

New starters stay for lunch

All our new Reception starters stayed for their first lunch this morning.  Here they are enjoying a Farmhouse Brunch – yummy!

Chinese Fans

Scafell have enjoyed their first afternoon back in school designing and making Chinese fans for our Westmorland County Show Display in the ‘Learning for Life’ tent.

We’ve really enjoyed researching ideas before practising and developing our own designs in our lovely new sketchbooks.  We’ve also carefully measured and cut the frames of our fans.  Look our for our finished designs later this week….
