We have been designing Superheroes for a special Library Service competition. The originality and creativity of the ideas has been most impressive – well done to all!
Here are a few of the designs that have been handed in so far. You have until Friday to give us your contributions – they can be drawn in any media or be a photograph of a model.
Year 1 were quickly settling to some number tasks this morning as they arrived in school. Take a look at some of the tricky activities set by Mrs Haslam. Also pictured, is our Maths Challenge Area full of interactive resources to develop and extend our maths learning in continuous provision:
Well done to all our year 5 pupils who represented Levens at the Level 1 Primary Athletics Competition in Dallam Sport’s hall competing against many other local schools. Our 11 athletes travelled around a total of 10 events, including: shuttle runs, javelin, long-jump and hurdles. Certificates are on the way to our team at our next Celebration Assembly.
Today we were visited by a serving soldier, Paul, and Jude from Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life in Carlisle, They are touring many Cumbrian schools raising awareness of Remembrance and why this year is a special 100 year anniversary.

It was interesting to see an actual memorial plaque that was given to the next of kin of all service personnel who were killed as a result of the First World War.
I saw a photo of a real poppy that a solider saved in his hymn book.
I learned that medals can be different colours and given for different things.
Family members can wear medals, given to someone who has died, on Remembrance Day on the right side of their jackets.
I learnt that soldiers now, often go to countries to try to keep the peace rather than go to fight,
We were encouraged to go home, talk to our family members and find out about anyone close to us that was involved in any of the World Wars.
On Wednesday of this week, years 5+6 enjoyed a wonderful afternoon in the grounds of Elleray School at an orienteering event attended by primary schools in the South Lakes area. The children quickly learnt how to navigate their way through fields, woodland and lots of mud competing for the finishing the course in the quickest time. We also learnt how to read and interpret an orienteering map. Two of our teams had the fastest scores of the afternoon and are pictured here.

Autumn trees were being created with great enthusiasm today in our Yoyo After School Club. The children painted and decorated their wooden trees with care and attention to detail.

Our Harvest preparations are in full swing for tomorrow’s celebration in St John’s Church. Each class will be showcasing some of their learning with growing vegetable soup, sharing the apple harvest and facts and figures about King’s Foodbank. This is our local Foodbank in Kendal who will be the recipients of our harvest gifts this year. Cans, packets and long life gifts will be most welcome. Please do come along for our 2pm service – all welcome.
We have been thinking all about sharing linked to the Christian festival of Harvest.
We’ve been lucky that Sam’s family have shared their apple harvest with us. We looked carefully at the colours and textures of the outside of the apples and drawing them using oil pastels. We then cut them in half, in different ways, and have drawn them in chalk pastels.
This week we have also been practising our cutting skills using the bridge grip and the claw grip to safely chop up the beautiful Bramley apples before cooking them. We have enjoyed sharing and eating them with cool natural yogurt.
This week, Bowfell class have been inspired by reading the book Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert. They peeled and chopped, ripped and cut the vegetables using carrots, cabbage, sweet potato, onion and potato. They added stock and let it simmer on the cooker. The next day they enjoyed eating their soup at snack time.
Bowfell class children have had the opportunity to practise their writing skills with carrots and paint this week. This has been a way to engage in writing and mark making in a fun way and to develop their fine motor skills. Here a few of them in action…
