Thankfully the rain held off on Friday afternoon as parents, friends and pupils gathered to celebrate the gymnastics and dance work that have been on going throughout the year. Many thanks to Mrs Craggs and Miss Nic for their hard work in developing these wonderful routines and special thanks to those who donated cakes and biscuits for the interval. Enjoy the videos!
What a wonderful day we all had at Heaves Farm yesterday!! The whole school walked up the hill to enjoy learning more about farming and how our food gets to our plates. Some of our favourite sections of our tour included: the piglets, tractors, watching the sheep dogs rounding up the sheep and holding the new-born chicks. This event is organised by the Westmorland County Agricultural Society every two years; who invite schools from all over the area to visit – over 1600 school children from Cumbria visited Heaves Farm this year. We feel extremely priviledged to have been invited once again. Another memorable learning adventure at Levens School.
Scafell Class have enjoyed investigating how beans and seeds germinate and explored the conditions for growing seeds during their Science topic on Living Things. Today we continued our observational drawings and annotations showing how our beans have changed over time.
Bowfell Class took part in an orienteering trail set up by Dallam School this week. We went on the hunt for the lost pants!
We have successfully harvested our potatoes…and we found lots of them!!
On Thursday we went to Pupil Parliament. We started off with a wonderful speech by David Bone then we did some fun ice breaker activities with the other children. First we sculpted each other into Olympic athletes then we had to be a piece of garden furniture with our whole group. Our next activity was making a day at the zoo with our body it was fun. After that we had an interesting talk all about parliament, elections and voting.We now all understand how this democratic process works in our country. Our next task was to be separated from everybody we knew and make a political party with a manifesto and a logo. Then we got a ten minute break and had a huge cookie and a drink. Then we got in our groups and got our speeches and slogans ready for the election. After a wonderful lunch of pizza and chips with sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream; we had the election And school squad Utd won but Mrs Farraday was also elected as an MP! Then we looked at some real manifesto publications; and after looking at them all we were persuaded that we supported some parties more than others . Then the teachers thanked Rachel Dodgson and David Bone who do an amazing job at organizing and creating SLPP.

This week, children in Scafell have made a great start to their two minute talks on a subject of their choice. So far, we have had presentations on: cats, karate, warships, tanks, giraffes, Warhammer and camper vans! The children have used artefacts and IT presentations to support their speeches. We are looking forward to more next week!
We were delighted to welcome back Keith Robinson from Newcastle Falcons today and he bought the drier, sunny weather with him too! Keith joined us for the first in a 5 week project, funded by Comic Relief, to raise issues of deaf awareness in sport. We spent the first session learning 10 new words in sign language and then enjoyed a session outside practising our tag rugby skills. When you meet any of Skiddaw class you might like to ask them to teach you to sign one of the new words they’ve learnt!
We weren’t in the classroom yesterday, but we were learning lots! These are some of the things the members of Skiddaw class have mentioned today about their adventures. We’ve learnt that…
…bracken and oak trees have different caterpillars feeding on them.
…tallow from animal fats can be used to make candles and that they can have grass wicks.
…hazel trees grow many smaller shoots that can be made into charcoal and for arrows.
…orange numbers on maps are contour lines and close together lines show a steep slope.
…the top of a map is north!
…at the centre of the earth is a gigantic magnet.
…our songs and shouts echoed in the caves.
…how important it is to help others and the importance of motivating a team.
…holding a hand or giving support in the dark really helps people when they are scared.
We think that’s pretty good for one day!
The seeds we planted with Darren a few months ago have grown! They are now going back to the Wilson house to be taken down to their allotment and planted there. We hope to go down and visit them soon,
