Fun with Fractions!

This week Reception and Year 1 have been learning about fractions. They have learnt that a half is one of two equal parts and that a quarter is one of four equal parts.

Today our Reception children took part in some practical fun fraction finding activities using playdough.

Year One had coloured counters in different multiples of 4; they used sorting trays and quarter mats to find out what a quarter of each of their counters was.

We are going to continue learning about fractions for the rest of the week and answer some problem solving mastery questions in order to make a lovely display in our classroom. Come back soon to see what we get up to…

Bowfell Clear Up by Year 5

This afternoon, Year 5 (with Miss Dawson) enjoyed some gardening and clearing up in Bowfell’s outdoor area; all ready for more work to commence on Friday! The children worked hard by brushing up leaves, cleaning equipment, saving creepy crawlies and weeding the plants. They did a great job, despite the change in weather and had a great time too. Thank you Year 5!

Bowfell Outdoor Area

We are all very excited about starting to develop our outdoor learning space.  Our EYFS and Year 1 children have been thinking about what they would like: a shelter, waterwalls, water trays and a sandpit were among the favourites.  We also enjoyed watching the drone take some special photographs of the area so that we can start making plans.   Bowfell Clear up Afternoon is Friday 11th May at 2pm.  Please come along to help (armed with tools) to get us underway if you can!

Scafell Outdoors!

On April the 30th, Scafell went on an exciting adventure to Lake Windermere!

The adventure began at 1 o’clock once we had all kitted up into our tight wetsuits and excitedly walked down to the jetty. Scafell did three activities and they included: Canoeing, Kayaking and Sailing. They were split into three groups and each group participated in two of the activities each. With the kayaking, you were in a single kayak and had a double ended paddle to row yourself in. As for the canoeing, you were in a longer boat, which held multiple people and you had to work in a team to go further. While in the canoe, we sang some songs and played some fun games! Sailing involved a race, as we were sent deeper into the lake and then the instructor let us go! The two boats raced each other back to the beach. At the very end, we had a chance to jump of the jetty into the water!

In conclusion, this trip was great fun and was a brilliant chance to get outside!

Reading for Treasure and more!

Wow! What an amazing few weeks we have had since launching our ‘Reading for Treasure’ initiative! Every class have now developed beautiful reading areas; an ongoing reading competition has already had two very happy winners; our bookmark competition enabled 5 more children to gain book vouchers; every child now has their very own personalised bookmark and we held a very successful Reading Celebration Evening for parents yesterday. Additionally, Reading Club began last week and once a week children throughout school read together in their family groups. The Bookfair has also provided us all with some lovely, new books.  It will be in the school hall, for the final time, tomorrow at 3pm.

Reading really has become a pleasure for all and the children love their new reading areas. Thank you to all the staff, children and families who really have jumped on board with our reading drive. Here’s to a very successful and positive term ahead!

Roman Armour

Never before have we had a parent approach us to say they could get hold of some Roman armour and could bring it in if we wanted. But that is exactly what Damian Parker said so in came two fabulous helmets and metal armour. We have enjoyed researching Roman armies and looking very carefully at the armour when drawing using two different media – graphite and black pens. You can see our pictures on display in Skiddaw and in the back ground of the photos here. With grateful thanks to Damian for having such super resources to share!

Kendal Ski Competition

Well done to the FAB-FOUR who competed in this year’s Kendal Schools’ Ski Competition.  They were up against very competent skiers including children who ski for England!  They won many of their races, but just not quite enough to get us through to the finals.  They are already in training for next year’s competition.   Huge thanks to Steve (Lucie’s dad) for organising the event and our team.  Well done everyone!

Year 2 visit to Greengate Meadows

On Tuesday 24th April Year 1 & 2 had a visit from Build a Bear, Michelle and Jamie from Story Homes. The children were shown a video and asked all about the dangers on a building site. They then dressed in high visibility jackets and hard hats – child size of course! They asked lots of questions and showed their really good knowledge of hazards.

Year 2 were then lucky enough to visit the building site to see and hear all the activities on site needed to build a new house.

Do you know how many bricks are used to build a house? Around 12,000! We learned a lot of interesting facts. We were cheeky and went inside the show home to look at all the sparkly worktops and new furniture, after we had taken our shoes off of course!

Noun Phrases in Year 2

This week year 2 have been learning about noun phrases.  Our task involved choosing a suitable adjective to describe our objects.  Then, we had to change places to find a different adjective appropriate for a different object and so on.  The next challenge was to write our own expanded noun phrases containing three adjectives and using commas accurately.  Super work from a keen group of super stars!!
