Kendal Mountain Festival

On Friday 17th November, Scafell went to the Mountain Festival at the Leisure Centre to celebrate our local area, amazing people and the beautiful world around us.

We met a scientist (Huw James) who showed us how avalanches work, and taught us about the right gear to wear when climbing Mount Everest. He also showed us how to survive in the cold, and how to get a drink from the river or dirty water. He used a special cup that separates the dirt and the bacteria to make edible and clear water.

Afterwards, we played a little game called ‘I’m a student get me out of here’ where some poor pupil and teacher victims had to eat disgusting bugs including; a grasshopper, a locust, a mealworm and a water-bug. We even got to meet Bruno the slithering Snake!

We also heard from the very famous Matt Dickinson about his amazing adventures. It inspired us all! We had an amazing time, and especially liked watching the paragliding film. Thank you to Miss Dawson, Mr Webb, Mr Stewart and Mr Pickles for taking us!

Children in Need 2017

School Council organised a cracking day for us to help raise money for a very worthwhile cause. We dressed in non-uniform and wore lots of Pudsey Bear yellow for the day. A bring and buy, toys and book stall was held in the afternoon and altogether we raised a wonderful £135.55! After learning more about the real life stories behind the young Rickshaw riders, we watched the filmed footage from Tuesday on the One Show. We saw ourselves, cheering Liv on, flash onto the screen! In true democratic style, we took a vote and chose to pledge our money towards the Rickshaw Challenge total part of Children in Need.

Well done and thank you everyone!

Tag Rugby Tournament

We played a tag rugby tournament at Dallam School. We played five games and won three games and lost two. We played Storth, Arnside, Crosscrake and Milnthorpe. Thank you Mrs Craggs for your help.

Anti-Bullying Week

This week is National Anti-bullying Week and the school have been thinking about how we can be kinder to each other. The whole school are in the process of signing a pledge: to make everyone here, feel valued, respected and part of our school community, today and everyday.

Today some of our junior pupils came together to work with Miss Dawson. Firstly, we watched a video about one girl’s experience of bullying, and how it made her feel. You can watch it here at:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/34857817

We then used toothpaste as a symbol to demonstrate how once our negative words have been said we cannot ‘put them back’ again. Some of the children made an attempt at this, resulting in some sticky but minty-fresh smelling hands!

Estimating and Measuring in Cooking

This week, Bowfell have been applying their skills to estimate, share and measure learnt in maths to cook delicious delights  with Mrs Mason.   The children used their knowledge to share the quantities equally, to read scales and weigh ingredients accurately as well as: develop language; work collaboratively; develop fine motor and follow  instructions.  Vegetable Frittatas for everyone to take home and share! Yum-Yum!!

Children in Need Rickshaw Challenge

The whole school was outside this morning clapping, singing and shouting our support to the brave young people taking part in the Rickshaw Challenge.  Well done everyone and keep going.  Levens School is cheering you all the way to Glasgow!

 

We Will Remember

This morning we walked down to church for our Remembrance Service outside St John’s Church.

Members of Scafell class read a famous poem – In Flanders Fields, members of Skiddaw class read a prayer they had all written and Bowfell class laid poppies they had all made on the memorial.

We sang a song about remembering and observed our two minutes silence.

We were led by Pam and joined by Governors, staff and family members. Thank you to everyone – we showed our great respect and thoughtfulness for others.

More Measuring in Bowfell

This week has been all about estimating and measuring in Bowfell.  We started with a treasure hunt all around school on Monday trying to find the objects in our photographs.  Once we had identified the pictures; we each estimated the length of the objects before we measured them using unifix blocks.

On Wednesday, we started to explore capacity and volume.  We have learnt lots of new vocabulary like: greater than, smaller than, half full, empty and full.  We worked well together comparing different containers; sometimes we were surprised because they could hold more or less water than we expected.

Next week we will be having more fun with our learning when we move on to weighing!

Meet our 2017 Eco Team!

At lunchtime today, Eco Team had their very first official meeting with Miss Dawson. It was very productive and the team have thought up lots of fantastic ideas to encourage the school and the community to care for the environment. Just a few ideas discussed include: creating an Eco Code, organising a litter pick, creating posters to display around school (saving electricity, looking after plants, not littering), an Eco Book and even adopting an endangered animal such as a Red Squirrel.

We will be meeting again next week to make a start on these ideas! We will keep you posted with our exciting news.

Knots Galore!

We began today with a few games of hide and seek – Finlay, Jason and Alfie were particularly good at hiding! The theme for this week was knots! We were challenged to see how many sticks we could bundle up to carry, securing them with any of the knots we have learnt in class or by making up our own. Q. How many sticks can you carry? A. Lots – over 100 in come cases. Lots of counting, estimating and problem solving here!

Others explored knotting and tying to attach leaves and twigs to trees to form hanging sculptures.

We finished off the afternoon with some warming hot chocolate – mmmmm!

Many thanks to the adults who came with us – we’ve all been grateful to the weather and enjoyed our time in the outdoors.
